An extraordinary high quality "Choba tansu" from town of Nagai, Yamagata, one of the northernmost six prefectures of Honshu Island. It was produced in c.1869, just a year after Japan was totally reformed from its long period shogunate regime and met to the new world.
This merchant's ledger chest is comprised of every high quality component you can imagine for a functional ledger chest by any aspect of material, woodwork, and design. Most parts are made out of beautiful Keyaki (similar to elm) with exquisite grain and texture, and sleek "Urushi" lacquer finish on it nicely retaining its deep amber color as since production.
The craftsman who did this brilliant work for the gem is identified as a man named "Wakagi-ya Yahei" ("Wakagi-ya" is his family's business name, and "Yahei" is his first name), supposedly a dweller of Nagai who also was known as a masterly cabinetmaker (Sashimono-shi) born in c.1828.
The chest has 9 long drawers that reach to the deepmost and a shelf with a movable board above them. Each drawer is beautifully placed showing stable balance overall.

In excellent condition. With three keys for drawer locks.
This item is also available at the shop in Fuchu, Tokyo.
